Scalable two-dimensional membranes for ultra-fast, energy-efficient gas separation
SEPARATIC is a start-up based at the University of Freiburg that is redefining gas separation. Its aim is to develop ultra-high-permeance membranes for hydrogen separation that are both inexpensive to install and operate. The team is initially targeting the recovery of purged hydrogen from fuel cells. The new patented technology separates hydrogen 2 to 6 times more cheaply and 10,000 times faster than conventional approaches.
The project involves designing membrane separation units (MSUs) made up of numerous membranes in rows that can be easily integrated into existing infrastructures. The ultimate aim is to develop mobile systems to capture carbon directly from the air and install them in Swiss cities and businesses.
