Am I ready to start a business? The 5 questions to ask yourself before taking the plunge
The desire to start your own business is there, but are you really ready? Before diving in headfirst, take the time to address five essential personal questions objectively. Your answers will lay the foundations of your business project.
Starting a business is a demanding adventure: long days, short nights, a significant personal and financial investment. The price of independence is high, but the effort can prove deeply rewarding. You still need to start on solid ground, though. Here are the five questions every future entrepreneur should honestly ask themselves before getting started.
1. What are my deep motivations for becoming an entrepreneur?
Everyone has their own motivations, and they are all valid: a need for independence, a desire to create, a search for meaning, a market opportunity, a career change... What matters is clearly understanding what is driving you to go it alone. This clarity will act as your compass in the difficult moments that are bound to come.
2. What do I want to achieve with my project?
Try to identify as precisely as possible the goal you want to achieve through this project. Is it to make a living from your passion, create jobs in your region, solve a problem you care about, or build a business with strong growth potential? A clear goal enables you to make consistent decisions throughout the journey.
3. What are my strengths and talents?
Identify as far as possible what you are naturally good at, and learn to play to your strengths and talents. An entrepreneur who capitalises on their strengths moves forward faster and with more enjoyment than one who spends their time compensating for weaknesses.
4. Do I have the skills needed to carry out my project?
Take stock of your skills, including your knowledge of the sector that interests you, and compare them with all those you will need to see your project through: technical, commercial, financial, administrative skills...
For the skills you lack, there are several solutions: finding support, associates or partners, delegating certain tasks, or training yourself. The key is to have a clear view of what you master and what you will need to find elsewhere.
5. Do my family and friends support me in my project?
Having your family's moral and/or financial support is very important. To get started, you will need to invest a lot of time, energy and certainly money. People around you who understand and support what you are doing are a precious asset, both practically and psychologically.
What next?
If your answers to these five questions strengthen your desire to become an entrepreneur, congratulations: you have taken the first step in your thinking. The next is to test your idea in the field to understand the problem you want to solve and the real needs of your future customers.
