Sustainable elegance on Fribourg feet
Kuno, in June 2025 you officially launched your shoe brand, which breaks with the usual conventions. Where did the idea come from?
The idea came from a mixture of frustration and intuition. Frustration with the often monotonous range of men's shoes: elegant, certainly, but rarely original and generally not very comfortable. And an intuition that it was possible to take contemporary design elements from the sneaker world to transform the experience of formal shoes. My experience at Nike and adidas showed me that style and comfort are not incompatible, even in the premium segment.
What was the biggest challenge during development?
Without doubt, developing the interchangeable outsole. Several years passed between the initial idea and a marketable product, and countless prototypes were made. At the same time, we didn't want to make any compromises on comfort. For that, we worked with movement scientists from Swissbiomechanics. Every ergonomic aspect was examined: the shape, the materials, the construction. Our goal is to prove that excellence, style and environmental responsibility go perfectly together.
What concretely sets your products apart from those already on the market?
The main difference lies in our modular structure with an interchangeable outsole. Each pair comes with a replacement sole. It can easily be changed by a local cobbler, as with a classic dress shoe. At the end of the product's life, worn shoes can be returned. We collect them, send them to a state-of-the-art recycling plant and turn the recovered material into new outsoles. This creates a genuine cycle.
Your shoes are made in Portugal. Why that choice?
We looked at various production countries, but in the end Portugal won us over. The country not only has a long tradition of shoemaking, but also genuine craft excellence. We were particularly impressed by the density of specialised partners in a small area. Every pair of KANREY shoes is made within a radius of just ten kilometres between workshops, material suppliers and recycling partners. In Switzerland, such a specialised production chain with the corresponding craft ecosystem would have been difficult to set up. Portugal offers us the ideal conditions.
Where can people try on your shoes today?
In Fribourg, exclusively at Angéloz Mode, which is very symbolic for us. This house stands for style, trust and high standards. Starting with such a renowned partner helps us anchor the brand credibly at local level.
Speaking of which, how did the first weeks after the launch go?
Very well! We have received a lot of positive feedback, both from specialist retailers and from end customers. The first sales have already been made, which is hugely motivating. We worked for a long time to get here, and now it's really under way.
Fri Up has been advising and supporting you since the start of this project. What is your relationship today?
Fri Up supports our development by providing strategic advice and giving us access to a large network. The association recently helped us spread the word about our launch by coordinating the press release.
