GBY: “Go by yourself”

GBY's story begins with a tragic accident that left its founder, Sebastian Tobler, a keen sportsman, tetraplegic. He then set out to develop a method that mobilises the whole body in a synchronised movement. This innovative idea would become the heart of GBY and its flagship product: the Trike.

An award-winning innovation in full expansion

In 2021, the company won the canton of Fribourg's innovation prize, which became the IFF prize in 2024. In 2022, nine years after his accident, Sebastian Tobler took his first steps. These two results triggered academic collaborations, and the start-up broadened its scope, working on patented devices for clinical therapy to maximise the chances of recovery.

A decisive pilot study

GBY works closely with several academic institutions, including the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) and in particular the laboratories of its HuCE institute (Human Centered Engineering). GBY is now preparing a pilot study, a key step before the clinical validation of its devices. The four-year study aims to confirm the effectiveness of the therapy developed by the company on a small group of patients.

Towards scientific recognition and a sustainable business model

GBY is therefore at a decisive turning point and has launched a fundraising round.

“With more than 100 trikes sold, we are a company but also a research platform,” explains the founder. “Now it's about taking these innovations from the laboratory to the clinic.” And thus turning them into therapeutic solutions accessible to all.

Support from the very first steps

“Fri Up has always been there, right from the start,” recalls GBY's founder. This support took the form of strategic advice, help in structuring the company and support in the search for funding. “They were our point of contact for understanding key concepts, such as building a solid financial plan. Whenever we had a question or a problem, we could count on them to guide us and connect us with the right people.” For GBY, this proximity is a major asset in an environment as dynamic as technological innovation.
