We support start-up Swibrace

Medtech – Since July 1, we have had the pleasure of supporting Fribourg-based start-up Swibrace, which specializes in the development of non-invasive orthopedic treatments.

Its team has developed an innovative splint that replaces surgery for wrist fractures, particularly among the elderly. The Fribourg start-up’s innovation lies in its manufacturing process. With the support of a doctor, the patient first takes photos of his or her other intact wrist. Based on these photos, Swibrace uses a patented technology to model, in just a few minutes, a splint that will perfectly support the fractured wrist. The start-up then 3D prints the splint and delivers it in less than three days. Made-to-measure, the splint can be tightened or loosened at any time, depending on the swelling of the injured limb. This solution effectively replaces surgery, avoiding scarring and potential complications.

Swibrace is also in the process of certifying an innovative treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome and spring finger. Its team has developed a needle-sized surgical instrument which, under ultrasound, enables percutaneous release of the wrist or finger. This method offers a particularly interesting alternative to conventional surgery, as it avoids a sutured incision and hence a visible scar. What’s more, it enables patients to resume their usual activities immediately, compared with the usual recovery time of several weeks.

Convinced of the potential of these two innovations, we are already supporting Swibrace in the various aspects of its development and fund-raising. An important step has already been taken in this area, as Swibrace has just obtained its first seed loan of 100,000 francs from the Seed Capital Fribourg foundation.
